Cagayan de Oro City, having a land area of about 20,496.02 km2 and a growing population of 4,689,302 continues to boom economically, a major contributor for Northern Mindanao Region's ranking in the Per Capita Economic Output in 2020, Region 10 ranked second highest among all regions, following the National Capital Region with a per capita GRDP/GRDE at 163,952 pesos.
Cagayan de Oro City's Economic has boomed despite the pandemic, with food manufacturing, energy generation, agricultural outputs, online and ICT-related services, as well as, personal protective equipment and disinfectant productions all have been considered as resilient industries during this public health crisis. The diversified economic activities, resilient food manufacturing and agricultural sector, and other mitigating measures in the region helped cushioned the impacts of COVID-19 and kept the local economy afloat.
CDO Being the 3rd largest region in Mindanao has a lot of potential in terms of economic, the location of Cagayan de Oro City is perfect to become the metropolitan center by having the major gateway and transshipment hub. CDO has a Potential growth in Agribusiness - banana, rubber, bamboo, cacao, coco coir, coffee; Food and consumer manufacturing; Logistics and supply chain; Tourism and hospitality related industries.
Cagayan de Oro City is one of the important cities in the country being the regional capital of Northern Mindanao, considered the primary gateway to the rest of the Mindanao regions. Being a port city, it plays the role as a transhipment hub and is economically linked especially with the other port cities in the other islands of the country.
CDO serves as the commercial center of Northern Mindanao. Taking the lead in trading are those dealing with consumer goods, construction materials, hardware and auto supplies, and agricultural products most of which are produced in the region. Its dominant industries are food processing, furnitures and metalworks. Agribusiness largely constitutes livestock and poultry, and fruits/crops production and processing.
The Master Plan for the Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Development in Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro (SUID Metro CDO) will compose of the following cities and municipalities:

With Six (6) adjacent municipalities assessed for possible expansion:

- Baungon
- Libona
- Malitbog
- Sumilao, and
- Talakag
With that, Metro CDO will become the host of the largest industrial estate in the country. The Industrial center of Region X since we already have the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate having a 3,000-hectare Industrial Area with 2.7 hectare for development. Philippine Sinter Corp (JFE Steel Corporation), Pilipinas Kao, Steag State Power Inc., San Miguel Corporation, Jacobi Group, FDC Utilities Inc. Mindanao International Container Services Inc., and Coca-Cola.
In terms of Commercial and Trade Center, CDO already have Technoparks, BPOs, logistics, and regional malls, 178 banks and counting, to which 80% of all banks in the region are located in Cagayan de Oro with 20% annual rate of increase in bank deposits.

Metro CDO Railway, Metro CDO Transit Oriented Development, Metro CDO Cable Car System with Related Tourism Development, Metro CDO Waste to Energy, and Water Supply Improvement Projects are just a few of the Metro CDO Development Prospects.
Cagayan de Oro City is now ready to become a Metropolitan together with the different cities and municipalities in the region. It is now time to expand the Industrial, Commercial and Trade althroughout the region. Hopefully, we will finally strike Gold in Metro CDO when it happened.
