Thirty-two hours of community service, a P2,000 fine, 15 days of imprisonment or both?
These are the penalties faced by violators of Ordinance No. 13946-2020 which mandates compliance with health safety protocols in Cagayan de Oro City such as wearing of face mask and face shield as well as physical distancing during an epidemic, Councilor Maria Lourdes Gaane said.
´These penalties are in accordance with guidelines by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF). Despite the initiatives taken by the city government, there are more local COVID-19 cases now. Maluoy ta sa (Have mercy on our) frontliners who sacrifice their lives to us, maluoy ta sa atong pamilya (have mercy on our families) who may be infected if we don´t comply with health protocols,´ Councilor Gaane said during Wednesay´s (Sept. 16) press briefing.
The provisions for the penalties were authored by Councilor Gaane, who chairs the 19th City Council´s health committee and Councilor Romeo Calizo, chairman of the public safety committee. Unlike other ordinances, Gaane said there won´t be any first, second and third offenses for violators who will punished by any three of these penalties based on Councilor Edgar Cabanlas´s suggestion.
´The city government will organize sub-clusters from the barangays, business and private sector. An intensified education campaign will follow along with training of persons that may be deputized for monitoring. If people find it hard to comply with health protocols it´s best for them to stay at home,´ Councilor Calizo said. The penalties take effect on Oct. 5.
