In a positive development for the youth of Cagayan de Oro, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-10 is set to implement the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) in the city for the calendar year 2023. This will offer a great opportunity for 528 working students to earn and learn at the same time.
Under SPES, participating students will be able to render services for a duration of 20 to 75 days and earn the existing minimum wage in the city, with a 40% counterpart from DOLE-10. The total budget allocated for this program is P2,566,826.40.
To ensure a smooth implementation, an orientation was conducted by the DOLE-10 Cagayan de Oro City Field Office on March 3, 2023, at the Deluxe Hotel in the city. The Provincial Director Emmanuel G. Toledo led the event, which was attended by partner implementers Lourdes College Inc., PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro City College, Golden Arches Development Inc. (McDonald's), and the Local Government Unit of Cagayan de Oro City. Representatives from these organizations were also present to refresh their understanding of SPES and its reportorial requirements.
The benefits of SPES go beyond just earning money for school expenses. It also provides students with valuable skills that they can use throughout their lives and helps them make a smoother transition from school to work.
DOLE-10 CDO Field Office Chief Toledo is optimistic about the future that awaits the 528 young minds who will participate in the program. He believes that the convergence between the DOLE-10 CDO Field Office, the Job Placement Bureau-Public Employment Service Office, and the partner implementers will create a bright future for these deserving individuals, giving them a chance to achieve their dreams and unlock the potential that lies ahead of them.
