Accelerating the Mindanao Railway Project – A Call for Urgency and Reform

The prolonged delays and bureaucratic red tape hindering infrastructure projects in the Philippines have long been a source of frustration. Among the most eagerly anticipated projects is the Mindanao Railway, a venture that promises to revolutionize transportation and economic growth in the region. However, years of sluggish progress have left many wondering if this vital project will ever come to fruition.

Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez has taken a commendable step to address this issue. By writing to Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, Rep. Rodriguez is advocating for the designation of Regional Trial Courts (RTCs) in the 10th Judicial Region as Special Expropriation Courts for national railway projects, including the pivotal Mindanao Railway Project Phase 3. This move, if implemented, could significantly expedite the expropriation process, a critical bottleneck in infrastructure development.

The current system for handling expropriation cases is mired in inefficiency, leading to interminable delays. For a project as crucial as the Mindanao Railway, this inefficiency is not just an inconvenience; it is a roadblock to progress. The establishment of Special Expropriation Courts would streamline legal proceedings, allowing for a faster resolution of property acquisition issues and paving the way for swift construction.

Mindanao’s economic future hinges on improved transportation infrastructure. The Mindanao Railway is not merely a convenience; it is an economic catalyst. By facilitating the efficient movement of goods and people, the railway will reduce transportation costs, attract investments, and stimulate local economies. It will create jobs, boost tourism, and enhance the overall quality of life for Mindanaoans.

Rep. Rodriguez’s initiative is a pragmatic solution to a pervasive problem. It reflects a much-needed sense of urgency and a commitment to overcoming bureaucratic inertia. However, this proposal requires broad support from both the judiciary and the executive branches of government to succeed.

The establishment of the Mindanao Railway is a transformative project that cannot be relegated to the backburner any longer. The people of Mindanao deserve the economic opportunities and improved connectivity that this railway system will bring. It is high time to cut through the red tape and take decisive action.

We applaud Rep. Rodriguez for his foresight and dedication. Now, it is imperative that other leaders and stakeholders rally behind this initiative. The future of Mindanao’s development depends on our collective will to act swiftly and decisively.

Let us not wait another decade for what should already be a reality. The Mindanao Railway Project is a beacon of hope for a brighter, more connected future. It is time to turn that hope into reality.

Wheels in Motion: Bike NorthMin Campaign Launches to Promote Sustainable Tourism in the Philippines

Biking is gaining momentum as one of the fastest-growing modes of transportation and recreational sports in the Philippines. While many people bike primarily for recreational activities like road racing, mountain biking, and leisurely cycling, others use it as an alternative mode of transportation. However, due to the dominance of motorized traffic and the lack of biking infrastructure for protection, biking has been limited to local neighborhoods and rural towns.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further popularized biking in the Philippines since most public transportation was suspended and restricted. Biking became an alternative mode of transportation and a way for Filipinos to enjoy recreational activities in a safe and convenient way.

As part of this initiative, the Department of Tourism Regional Office 10 launched the Bike NorthMin campaign yesterday, May 13, 2023, at the Activity Center of Ayala Centrio Mall in Cagayan de Oro City at 5:00 PM. The event featured various activities and attractions that showcased the benefits of biking and the different biking routes and destinations available in the region.

The objective of Bike NorthMin is to promote bike tourism and encourage locals and tourists alike to explore the region's ecotourism destinations on two wheels that are more sustainable and eco-friendly. The launch also aims to encourage bike enthusiasts to join and enjoy the activities DOT-10 has prepared this year for this initiative, especially the forthcoming Camiguin Isle Bike Tour on May 28, 2023.

The Camiguin Isle Bike Tour is one of the most exciting events planned for this campaign. It aims to showcase the beauty and wonders of Camiguin Island through biking, promoting eco-tourism and sustainable travel in the area. Bikers can appreciate the island's unique natural attractions, such as its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation, all while exploring on two wheels.

The Bike NorthMin campaign promotes biking as a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation and a fun recreational activity. With the Camiguin Isle Bike Tour and other activities planned for this initiative, Filipinos and tourists alike can experience the beauty and wonders of the region's ecotourism destinations in a safe and convenient way.

Reviving Tourism and Boosting Employment: A Recap of the Northern Mindanao Tourism Job Fair

Northern Mindanao's recent tourism job fair held in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has been a huge success. The event was held for two days and saw participation from 75 employers across various industries such as hotel and lodging, retail and service, manufacturing, manpower services, and BPOs. The aim was to offer job opportunities to those who have been displaced due to the pandemic, with the hope of keeping the tourism industry alive by facilitating employment.

The job fair offered 2,500 open positions, with the top five vacancies being for financial advisers, customer service representatives, drivers, bus conductors, and accounting services. The event also featured cultural performances from the Kagay-an Performing Arts and Datu Pio Pataganao, which was a great opportunity to showcase the region's rich culture. Moreover, the event had a product exhibit of local crafts made by women's organizations, which was an excellent way to promote local artisans and their work.

National line agencies were also present at the event, with booths set up to make the processing of applicants' clearances and other essential paperwork easier and faster.

This job fair was a great opportunity for those who have been affected by the pandemic and are looking for work. It also served as a platform to showcase the region's culture and the excellent work done by local artisans. The partnership between the DOT and DOLE is commendable and should be replicated in other regions of the country to offer job opportunities to more Filipinos. Hotels in Northern Mindanao Fully Booked for Lenten Season, Camiguin Tops Reservations

The Department of Tourism (DOT) 10 (Northern Mindanao) has announced that most major hotels and resorts in the region are fully booked for the upcoming Lenten season. The announcement was made by DOT-10 Director Marie Elaine Unchuan during a press briefing held recently. She revealed that even resorts with accommodations are fully booked in the first week of April, in time for the Holy Week.

Camiguin Leads the Way

According to Unchuan, Camiguin had the most reservations as the island province is host to the annual "Panaad," where Catholic faithful visit churches and pray the Stations of the Cross. She said the influx is expected in Camiguin, especially with the launch of its tourism slogan "Isle Be There," and the easing of coronavirus disease 2019 restrictions for island visitors.

"Hinuklog" Cancelled

Unchuan, however, mentioned that the performance of the "Hinuklog" in Medina town, Misamis Oriental would not take place this year due to the local government's constraints. "Hinuklog" is an annual Holy Week event that highlights a street performance depicting the last days of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion and resurrection.

Job Fair for Displaced Tourism Workers

Meanwhile, the DOT-10, in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment, has facilitated a job fair, offering more than 2,000 vacancies in the tourism industry. "This is a major project of DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco to be able to help displaced workers and potential tourism workers to avail of jobs in the industry in one setting," Unchuan said. The job fair will be held from March 30 to 31, with 70 employers looking for fresh hires.

With the onset of the Lenten season, the Northern Mindanao region, particularly Camiguin, is expected to welcome a surge of tourists, despite the ongoing pandemic. While the cancellation of the "Hinuklog" may disappoint some visitors, the job fair offers an opportunity for those in need of employment.
